Cultural Diplomacy

International Relations is such a broad and wide topics to be discussed. Recently in the class, we have discussed about Culture and Diplomacy. Here I want to dig a bit more on the culture side, literally. 

We have acknowledged that people's behavior are somewhat determined by their culture. It works the same way in international relations. In international relations, diplomacy has been widely implemented in many aspects in the state. Currently, states are developing a cultural approach in order to strengthen relations with other states, enhance socio-cultural cooperation, and even to promote their national interest. Cultural diplomacy itself has made a significant impact for us in this globalized world. The world is beginning to realize that to embrace all parts of social elements, they have to be more innovative in building relations with other people, internationally. One of the way is by developing cultural diplomacy approach. The concept is to learn and have dialogue with other people by learning their culture, or approaching by the culture itself. Cultural diplomacy is critical to foster peace and stability throughout the world.

Indonesia is also practicing such cultural approach. In order to promote Indonesia's culture and tourism, the government send youth to attend international cultural festival in many countries. I also became a part of this cultural mission.

Being a part of these cultural mission was always become my honor. These experiences taught me to be proud of Indonesian culture and as a youth, we have to introduce our culture to other countries. I also realized that Indonesian culture are precious. Although in Indonesia we don't really get appreciation, but to other people living outside Indonesia, such as Europeans, they really adore us. Because we have plenty of culture, traditions, arts, and unique dances, that they don't have. 

I believe that these cultural mission (sending youth to dance or to introduce our culture), was not merely performances. But it also become one of cultural diplomacy approach. the effect behind this action were Indonesia has a good relation with such countries. Not only that, by showing our culture, we can also attract them to visit Indonesia, which can add more income in tourism site. 

Therefore, as a young generation, we have to realize that the demand on soft power (diplomacy) is increasing, we have to adapt and adjust it, by also playing the same game. Cultural diplomacy becomes an alternative and preferred way to achieve a mutual understanding.
